When it be stable enough for daily usage, VLC 3.0 will come with support for desktop capturing on systems using Wayland as display server, support for new formats (F4M, F4V, H.264, VC-1, MPEG-2, PCM, AC-3, E-AC3, MLP, DTS) will be added, the users will be able to play video/audio files inside archives (without having to extract the archive), a new feature that allows the users to add subtitles to videos via drag and drop and other bug-fixes and changes. The latest (unstable) version available for Linux is VLC 3.0, which has been recently released. As you may know, VLC is the most popular free video player.
